I really cannot get excited about the decision not to deport Learco Chindamo.
So he's Italian by birth. So what ? He came to the UK when he was five, has lived in the UK ever since and speaks no Italian. It would make absolutely no sense to deport him.
I have to admit I don't quite understand why this falls into the remit of the Human Rights Act rather than other legislation regarding the free movement of people within the EU - if we did deport him what would stop him coming back to the UK anyway ?
The real scandal is that he can apply for release next year, after just 12 years. That's life imprisonment for you, apparently.
On a lighter note the decision does give Jack Staw another score in my Fantasy Governement League, of which more anon...
