Every so often you hear a piece of news that puts everything else into perspective; politics, sport, work, the whole lot. The death of Jane Tomlinson is one such moment.
In 2000 doctors told her that her metastatic breast cancer was incurable and that she had just six months to live. Some people would have sat back and watched the last months go by. Jane Tomlinson didn't, Instead she dedicated her life to raising money:
she completed the Great North Run;
she ran the London Marathon three times;
she did the Ironman UK Triathlon (that's a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle ride followed by a 26 mile marathon);
she cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End, stopping only to receive chemotherapy (twice !);
she cycled 4,200 miles across America.
Many of these challenges she overcame in great pain, but she took them on with an indefatigable spirit. In doing all that, she raised over £1.5 million for charity and inspired many others through her determination and grit.
Apparently Jane Tomlinson thought she was an unremarkable woman. She was the only one who did.
