Military Sense Or New Labour Spin ?

Speculation that Gordon Brown is just about to call a General Election will not exactly be cooled by the story here about British troops withdrawing from their base at Basra Palace.

For all his protestations that he wants a new honest form of politics, Brown has not fought his way to the top of the New Labour hierarchy without learning anything about manipulating news events to suit his own ends. It seems at best highly convenient that this should be happening at the start of the week in which, if Iain Dale is to be believed, senior civil servants at No 10 are frantically clearing their diaries.

The spokesman of spin dragged from his croquet lawn to explain the latest operation in Iraq insisted that the prime minister was aware the operation was happening, but it was a military matter.

Yeah, right. And I'm a tomato.
